Taitung Beach (中文版: 台東海邊) is a long stretch of beach next to Taitung City and Taitung Forest Park. It's conveniently located in the city, for easy access to food and stores. The beach is only a short walk on foot, or can also be accessed by 4WD cars. It's notable for it's big waves and spectacular sunrises.
The terrain here is always changing, and there are many obstacles, such as driftwood, rocks, and patches of soft sand. If driving, it's important to use an offroad vehicle with a lot of clearance, and power to all 4 wheels. Always stay on the dry-parts of the beach, and avoid driving through salt water.
For people traveling by scooter or 2WD drive cars, you can park at the end of the Taitung Dike and walk from there. There is no shallow part of the ocean here, it gets deep immediately. This makes it very popular for fishing from the shore, but not so much for swimming. I only recommend it for experienced ocean swimmers, as there is also a shore break, which can make entering and exiting the water difficult when the waves are big. For those looking for a more relaxed and easy swim, this beach is in walking distance from Flowing Lake, and you’ll pass it on your way in. There you can find swimming areas with lifeguards at the west end of the lake.
