Lulu Hot Spring (中文版: 轆轆溫泉) is a large wild hot spring in Taitung, Haiduan Township, along the Southern Cross Highway. It has several outcrops over a 200 meter area that produce billowing steam, and hot pools for soaking in. From the hot spring there are also two canyons within short river-tracing distance. Kaiweng Canyon up the main river, which also has many hot spring outcrops, and Lulu Canyon up the side stream. To visit all three places it’s recommended that you plan to camp at the hot spring for two nights.
Lulu hot spring is deep in the mountains, and getting there requires either a steep hike or a long river trace. Most people choose to hike, which takes 3-5 hours, depending on how fast you walk and how much you are carrying. The hike is very steep, and has an 240 elevation gain, followed by a 800 meter decent. The last ~1km of the road to the trail head requires 4WD. Cars with low chassis should park at the GPS locations written below.
Tracing up from Dalun River has less elevation change, but is 13.5km long and takes about 5-7 hours, and may be difficult when the water levels are high.
Before going to Lulu Hot Spring it’s required to sign in at the police station, which can be done online or in person. Signing in online is recommended, as there can be a long wait at the police station.
