1）What's is your favorite place to swim in the whole world?
My favorite place to swim in the whole world is in the Sea of Galilee in Israel. But I think that is mostly due to my family and all the memories I have of swimming there. Israel only has one lake, so we called it a Sea!
2）Which is the most beautiful waterfall in Taiwan?
I think the most beautiful waterfall in Taiwan is Shalawan Waterfall. There was an incident a while ago which caused a lot of people to condemn it, and now it's closed. It's not more or less dangerous than any other waterfall in Taiwan. I'm really sad that it's not open for visiting anymore.
How did you come to Taiwan? I travel all over the world. Taiwan was just a stop along the way. But I liked it so much here that I've stayed for 6 years already.
What is it that you like about Taiwan? I have a pretty good life here :) Every day in Taiwan is an adventure. Even if I stay 100 years more, I won't have visited all the waterfalls.
What can be improved in Taiwan? "No swimming" signs are not the solution to safe rivers. Those signs are terrible and they don't help.
6) How do you find waterfalls. What GPS do you carry?
I find most waterfalls from satellite images. Mostly though Google Earth. I use my cell phone for GPS.
7) Is it a mistake to post GPS coordinates? Will that lead to more litter?
No. Trash makes it into the river from people who don't care about the environment. Not from nature loving adventurers. We pick up the trash that washes into the river from the side of the road. If only we could get the trash-throwers out into nature. Maybe then they would understand and would help us protect the environment. The more people who experience nature, the more people end up loving nature, and the more people who will protect nature.
9) Why are there less waterfalls on your website in Miaoli than other counties?
The weather in Miaoli is also often sunny! But there are few satellite images, so I have to go up the rivers blind.
10) Will you guide groups on river tracing trips?
I'm not a tour guide. I want to go with everyone up the rivers, but as friends.
11) Can we go with you?
I will start inviting people out with me after I get a car. But just as friends. I'm not a tour guide.
12) What should we prepare in order to ensure safety?
Everyone's experience and skill levels are different so everyone also needs to prepare different things. On the most basic level though, wear a life jacket if you you're not 100% confident and wear a helmet wherever there is a chance of falling rocks. Also it's very important to wear shoes with hard rubber bottoms so that you don't slip on rocks. Also carry a water filter and food with you too. You may be out for longer than you expect, and dehydration/sunstroke are just as deadly as drowning.
13) Will you organize the site so that people can find waterfalls and hot springs that don't require swimming?
I have been working on a new system of organizing the site based on a lot of different factors. I hope to have it up and running by the end of the month. I think you will like it. One easy way to go anywhere though is to just wear a life jacket.
14) Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Hillsborough, North Carolina. It's near UNC which most Taiwanese people know as "That place where Michael Jordan played college basketball." It's a beautiful place. The whole state is a giant forest.
15) How do you know if the water is deep enough to dive into?
Always swim out first and check the water depth. Don't guess.
16） If you can't find the path will you still continue?
About half the time I go somewhere that I know from looking at a satellite image I can't find an easy way to get there. I go through the tall grass, or forest where there is no trail, and it's usually pretty dirty and uncomfortable. My companions get mad at me. I'll find an easy trail on the way back though, and then draw a map for the easiest way. Then when you go you don't have to deal with all that =) If you can't find the road though, you can still go forward if you have time. Maybe you will find something really amazing that nobody knew was there!
17) There're plenty of stunning places around the world, what makes you want to stay in Taiwan? Thanks for your amazing work.
Yea there are so many places that I'd love to go to (here's where I've been so far) but Taiwan is where I am. Taiwan is so dense with awesomeness that I can travel indefinitely and still have a stable life. It's like being able to backpack but also have a career, apartment, garden, pets, and good friends. Right now I am completely my bachelors degree. I wasn't able to do that before because I was backpacking. Here I can do both!
