Hi Everyone. A stranger surprised me with a "Top 5 Camping" request, so here's a few of my favorites +2
Sunmoon Lake: Mountain Top Camping
This beauty I spotted from satellite photos while trying to save money on one of my first ever around the island scooter trips. Panoramic views from the top of a mountain, 5 minutes from Sunmoon Lake （日月潭）
Mingtan Pumped Storage Hydro Power Plant
Nantou County, Yuchi Township

High Roller: Fushoushan Roadside Gazebo
I drove past this gazebo on a previous road trip and decided that I absolutely had to go back there and camp. I did. And it rained. But who cares? That's why I love to camp under gazebos.
It's at 2500 meters above sea level, so be prepared for a cold night.
Roughing it in the City: Beachfront, Lakefront Camping
I've known about this spot for a while, but only just got around to camping at it. I camped in the gazebo because I like gazebo camping, and also because the weather in February 2016 was very unpredictable. I was concerned it might rain. There are actually many places you can camp there though, including the entire stretch of beach.
Have you ever swam naked in Huoshui Lake? I have. Because even at 11pm on Chinese New Year's weekend, there was no one there. People like to jog in the morning though, so if you do camp in the gazebo, be polite and pack up early.
On a Lake, On a River, On the Beach, in the Mountains
It sounds like an impossibility, but somehow this beach checks all those geographical boxes. The river flows down towards the sea and pools into a small lake in the sand, surrounded by towering mountains.
It's a great place to swim and relax. There is a gas station and family mart in the town.
Yilan County, Suao Township
Campsites 5 and 2 can be seen in this video.
My favorite camping spot in all of Taiwan: The Embodiment of Summer
It wasn't easy to choose a favorite, but it's hard to compete with camping at Tsengwen Reservoir in Dapu, Chiayi.
Pick up all the trash you see folks, not just the trash you bring with you.
*Note: The water level changes throughout the year, so the exact camping location varies. If you go to that general location though, you'll find a place to camp.
Bonus: There are dozens of waterfalls nearby, some of which you can find on this site and also here: Asher's Master Map of Cool Places
I've camped here three times, It's one of the best, and at 2700 meters above sea level, also one of the coldest. It's near the trailhead for Yushan Mountain. It's a great place to view Alishan's famous Sea of Clouds in the winter. It's a common place for people to camp before hiking Yushan mountain.
Chiayi County, Alishan Township
GPS: 23.482583, 120.885716
Living Life on the Ledge, A Fantastic Place to Camp.
This platform opposite the 2500 meter elevation sign on the Central Cross Highway, overlooking Hehuanshan (合歡山) is amazing.
Highway 8, Roadside Camping
Hualian County, Xiulin Township
I hope everyone enjoys these camping spots. In addition to those listed here, almost every hot spring and waterfall on this website has a camping spot marked nearby. Look for the tent icon on the maps and at the bottom of the page.
